STHREE RIDE – Women Drivers Initiative to Promote Women Empowerment, Safety & Economic Independence

In a significant step towards promoting women empowerment and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, the Women Safety Wing launched the STHREE RIDE – Women Drivers Initiative, aimed at enabling women to become financially independent through dignified employment opportunities in the mobility sector. Officials stated that women’s safety, empowerment, and economic independence are interconnected and creating opportunities for women would strengthen their position in society.


As part of the first phase of the initiative, specialized training was provided to 50 women bike riders, four women auto drivers, and one woman cab driver. Officials observed that increasing women's participation in public and private transportation services would enhance the sense of safety among female commuters. They stated that women drivers could play a significant role in providing safer transportation, particularly around bus stations, railway stations, and urban transit areas.

The training programme for women drivers was conducted under the leadership of MAWO CEO Jai Bharati. Supporting the initiative, zippi CEO Prasanna Narayan and Mahindra Auto provided vehicles for training purposes. In addition, employment opportunities were facilitated for trained women participants through collaborations with Bigili, zippi, and MAWO, enabling women to access livelihood opportunities in the mobility sector.

Speaking on the occasion, DGP Sri C.V. Anand said it was encouraging to see women coming forward confidently to work as professional drivers. He stated that women empowerment, safety, and capacity building remain among the key priorities under the government’s governance and development initiatives.

“Family support plays a crucial role in women’s success. Encouragement from husbands, parents, siblings, and family members can help women excel in any profession. Family support significantly boosts women’s confidence,” he said.The DGP stated that the Police Department has consistently been working towards strengthening women’s safety and recalled initiatives such as SHE Teams and SHE Cabs introduced during his tenure as Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad. He emphasized the need to further strengthen women-centric safety mechanisms.

He further said that the government is taking measures to encourage women leadership within the police department and highlighted the increasing participation of women officers in leadership roles. He stressed that support from families remains essential for women officers to take up greater responsibilities.The DGP noted that STHREE RIDE would provide women with opportunities to improve their family’s economic condition through professional driving careers.

“While working on roads, you may encounter challenges and occasional harassment from anti-social elements. However, the Police Department will always stand by you. Face challenges with courage and continue moving forward,” he advised the participants.Highlighting women’s achievements across sectors, he said women are already serving the nation as fighter pilots and excelling in several critical fields. He encouraged women to participate actively in transportation, service, and production sectors and contribute towards nation-building.

Officials stated that women should move beyond traditional professions and explore emerging career opportunities. They added that STHREE RIDE is not merely a transportation initiative but a movement aimed at providing women with confidence, dignity, economic security, and greater independence.In this event along with DGP C.V. Anand, Women Safety Wing DG Charu Sinha, Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, DG Law & Order Mahesh Bhagwat, DG Organisations Swathi Lakra, Multi Zone-I IG Chandrashekhar Reddy, IG Road Safety Ramesh Naidu and other senior police, NGOs and other officers are participated.
