CV Anand address at Sportstarconclave organised by The Hindu Newspaper

During the Sportstar Conclave - Focus Telangana, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand expressed his opinion on the significance of sports in community building and the positive impact it has on the nation. Anand also shared how sports have contributed to his personal and professional growth and encouraged young people to participate in sports.

Sports is an activity that brings people together, and as a nation and a country, we can move forward. Although sports is a physical activity, even activities such as yoga and laughter pranayama can give people great enthusiasm. I see the joy in people’s faces, and it reinforces the importance of Sports for Community Building.

When we were young and didn’t have much screen time, WhatsApp, or social media, we had a lot of spare time to play. We played a lot in schools, colonies, and in the streets. From cricket to flying kites, we had a lot of physical activity. Sports require physical movement, which helps build relationships and understanding with people that may not happen when playing a computer game,” Anand said.

The Indian sports ecosystem is steadily growing, and the emergence of star Javelin champion Neeraj Chopra has greatly enhanced the country’s reputation on the global stage, according to the police commissioner.

“Sports play a crucial role in developing essential life skills that are necessary to lead a fulfilling life. As a leader of an organization, I must manage it efficiently, and I believe that sports have been instrumental in teaching me the necessary skills to do so. My experiences playing cricket, tennis, and other sports have been invaluable in shaping my leadership abilities. Additionally, sports have a significant impact on building the image of a nation. For instance, the recent achievements of Neeraj Chopra and the men’s 4x400m relay runners have showcased the immense potential of Indian sports and athletes..,” he said.

Anand stated that compared to his era, it is now easier to earn a living by playing sports due to the drastic improvement in the ground situation.

“Previously the circumstances were different where there was no life security but now with the Khelo India games, slowly talent is coming and medals are coming. We need more moments like Neeraj winning a World Championship as it gives an impetus to the community. In my 32 years in police service, I found sports is a way to interact with people and the community and I have used sports in policing. Through sports, we could reach people and it was one of the methodologies to connect with people. Even Mohammad Siraj had a tough time before entering the Indian team and I am glad he is doing so well. I want Hyderabad cricket to grow and I wish them the best,” he added.

TSNAB nabs 6 Ganja peddlers

A gang of six people, including a police constable working with the Greyhounds unit in Warangal, were caught while in possession of 44 kilograms of marijuana by the Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau and Langer Houz police.

Officials also seized four modified high-end SUVs with compartments to conceal contraband and ₹12 lakh of drug money from the gang.

Those caught peddling drugs will have their properties seized, said the police.

Hyderabad police commissioner C.V. Anand said that the accused were identified as Vankudoth Veeranna, 33, Ajmeera Veeranna, 21, Surneni Manoj, 20, Merugu Madhu, 39, police constable Prashanth Naik Tejavath, 27, and Mohd Jahangir, 40.

The prime accused, Vankudoth Veeranna, set up an organised drug network since 2018 and has even posed as a policeman/government official to get past the toll gates and checkposts during the COVID-19 lockdown period, said the Commissioner.

“He ran the network with about 25 men by investing in high-end cars and having them modified to have compartments to conceal the drugs. The vehicles would have police sirens and labels of ‘Police’ and ‘On Government Duty’ on them. The accused also had fake police and government ID cards on his name,” explained the official.

Vankudoth Veeranna is a relative of constable Prashanth Naik, who taught him the tricks used by the police in catching drug smugglers. “This knowledge was used to hoodwink the policemen at junctions. Moreover, he would always meet the peddlers at a place in Beed, Maharashtra, by taking a flight out of Hyderabad,” added the commissioner.

It was also revealed that he purchased multiple cars, properties in Gudur and Uppal, and had also invested in shares of companies with the drug money. Efforts are on to seize all of his properties, said the police.

Mr. Anand explained that a provision in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances  (NDPS) Act allows a Station House Officer (SHO) to seize the properties of drug peddlers.

“We will be implementing the provision and start seizing properties of those caught peddling/smuggling drugs into Telangana,” said the official.

In another case, an International drug peddler, a Nigerian, operating from Bangalore was arrested. Using fake sim cards & dubious identities, he has been supplying ecstasy pills.

He also started an association, and has been arranging bails and aid for fellow criminals in Bangalore and surroundings and the activities were eerily similar to early mafia setups. 264 pills worth Rs 10.56 lakhs seized.
