Cyberabad Police arrested a Gang making fake credit cards

Commissioner showing the seized material.
The Special Operations Team (SOT) of Cyberabad Police found that about 400 PAN and Voter ID cards were obtained illegally by bribing the government officials and also by taking advantages of loopholes in the system.

Using these documents, the accused M. Jagan Mohan Reddy acquired 167 credit cards from various banks and gained money to the tune of Rs. 63 lakh — all this in the last couple of months. The police also arrested 13 of his accomplices who helped the accused get ID and credit cards on fictitious names.

On Tuesday, Cyberabad Commissioner C.V. Anand explained the modus operandi of the accused. The accused, Jagan Mohan Reddy, studied up to class 10. He initially worked as security guard and then as a field verification officer for banking institutions. Having gathered knowledge about processing and issuing of credit cards, he hatched a plan to make a fast buck.

As per the plan, he started collecting a number of PAN, Voter ID cards and IT returns on random names and addresses since these documents were basic requisites for obtaining credit cards.

For PAN cards, the accused allegedly bribed the official and lawyer in the sub-ordinate courts to get address proof certificates and an affidavit which was submitted along with application to UTI. The accused then influenced the delivery boys of Blue Dart to hand over all the PAN cards to him directly.

To procure Voter ID cards, the accused used agents and also GHMC outsourcing employees by paying them bribes.

Finally, all these documents were used to apply credit cards from HDFC, SBI, American Express and IndusInd banks, which he received by bribing sales executives and field verification officers. The accused also converted his house into a mini-telephone exchange by installing 37 landline connections and using 155 SIM cards for aiding phone verifications. Calling this incident as a “threat to national security”, Cyberabad Commissioner Mr. Anand said that there is every chance that terrorists might take advantage of the system and indulge in something similar.

Alarmed by the spurt in cases related to fake identification documents in the recent past, Mr. Anand informed that they will focus on refugees and illegal immigrants to check if they were trying to procure documents using illegal methods.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V.Anand at inauguration of the first edition of Cyber Security Conclave.

Concerned over the increasing threat to cyber security prevalent in the digital age, experts from across the country deliberated on important issues relating to cyber security and challenges to the fast-growing field of Information Technology, during the Annual Cyber Security Conclave, in the city on Tuesday.

The conclave, which was organised by the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) witnessed participation from several IT companies, including Microsoft, Wipro and TCS, among others.

Addressing the conclave, Chairman of SCSC, C.V. Anand revealed that there has been a steep increase in incidents of cyber crime in the recent past and emphasised on the need to have adequate security measures in place to deal with the threat.

“We have received a lot of complaints about comments on Facebook, etc. While people may not think of this as a major issue, even this is a sort of cyber bullying and every single individual is vulnerable to this threat,” Anand said.

Elaborating on the threat posed by cyber crimes in today’s world, Anand said, “Cyber crime can take place on different levels and everything is hackable. From personal accounts to bank accounts, nothing is secure. As against the popular belief, the majority of crime in cyber space is not related to hacking but related to phishing and other such crime.”

“Everything around us is changing quickly. I think just like our children are taught about Wi-Fi and technological devices, they will also have to be taught about the language used on cyber space. These are the things that we can expect to see in the future. It is important to create awarenesss in the citizens and also frame strategies, policies to govern the cyber space and prevent crime” Anand added.

Delegates from across the country participated in the deliberations on cyber security policy, and shared strategies to help IT companies effectively combat cyber threats. There were also panel discussions on topics such as “New Generation of Cyber Attacks”, “Forward leaning strategies for securing cyber space” and “Cyber Threats - The social dimension and legal imperatives”.

A New Approach to Control Eveteasing

Cyberabad SHE TEAMS have introduced a Q & A method to understand the psyche of an eve-teaser. The questionnaire has various questions ranging from a person’s family background to the factors which are contributing to his impulse to commit a crime against women. This valuable data is handed over to a group of trained professional counselors who engage the accused in a conservation to make them realize that what they are doing is not acceptable and to educate them about the repercussions of having a criminal record.

The main purpose is to address all the factors that give rise to criminality which exists in the society and to get rid of the ingredients that breed crime, by involving the family. Every SAturday, SHE TEAMS conducts counselling in CAW (Crime against women) Cell located in CP Cyberabad Office, Gachibowli.  Offenders caught by the teams in the previous week are called along with their families. Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V.Anand reviewed the functioning of SHE teams

Police Commissioner C.V.Anand reviewing  counselling sessions in CAW cell.
Videos depicting the crime are shown too.  Subsequently EAR (Examine, Accept, Reject thought) is explained to them and an attempt is made to understand their perception on the difference between pleasure and happiness.  Case studies are given to them regarding women victims.

While counselling the students, SHE TEAMS show them short films on victims and the trauma they undergo.  An attempt is made to understand the prime goals of student’s life and they are directed to achieve the above path.  They are also asked to give specific reasons on what triggers them to resort to public harassment of women.

The outcome of these counselling sessions are yielding good results, where in most of these offenders feel guilty of their act and promise the cops that they won’t repeat it ever. Since, the families are also involved, there is a societal pressure on the offenders to change their ways as they are exposed.

On the other hand, numbers of cases caught by and reported to SHE TEAMS have gone up.  Ever since, Cyberabad Control  (Dial 100) was integrated to SHE TEAMS, the frequency of getting a distress call from a women caller has gone up. The nature of such incidents varies from obscene behavior over phone, stalking, teasing, filming girls without their knowledge etc.

Cyberabad WhatsApp Citizen – Connect program has a separate group for SHE TEAMS which receives 3-4 cases everyday on an average. As the responses given by SHE TEAMS are prompt, this group also started receiving complaints on marital disputes, neighborhood issues, Cyber bullying etc.

Cyberabad Facebook Page is used for receiving online complaints and to create awareness through public campaigns. Even senior citizens have started sending mails to SHE TEAMS for protection
