The Hyderabad City Police hosted a multi-agency stake holder meeting, at City Police Commissionerate- TSPICCC, to stimulate a comprehensive approach to bolster steps at various levels to combat drug-trafficking and ensure better coordination among Central and State agencies. The event brought together the key actors of ED, NCB,DRI, GST, Excise, FRRO, Drugs Control Administration, Counter Intelligence etc.,
At the outset, City Police Commissioner Mr.CV Anand underscored the urgent need for coalition since the drug consignments originating from various parts of the world, including raw substances, are entering the country in through sea ports, airports and land borders too and further reaching metropolitan cities which prompts for unified operational responses and highlighted the need for exchange of information and enhanced coordination.
CP Anand said that state government has adopted a zero tolerance policy against drugs and said that protecting our citizens from the threat of dangerous and addictive drugs is of utmost priority. The H-NEW team apprised the attendees on the enforcement, education and rehabilitation measures initiated and flagged several operational hindrances which are being taken advantage by the perpetrators, especially the foreigners who are staying illegally and resorting to drug trafficking, other crimes.
Rachakonda CP Mahesh Bhagwat sharing his insights on the recent modus operandis and the ingenious ways of transporting the contraband said that synergy of all the agencies will also help in combating other crimes.
“We are leveraging technology & updating our database to keep a strict tab on perpetrators who often disguise their actual identity using fake passports and blend in high density areas in metropolitan cities.” said Sai Chaitanya Kumar, SP Counter Intelligence.
During the tour de table, participants discussed on the progress, policies, challenges in combating illicit drug trade and delved into various aspects of easing deportation process, tracking the stay of foreigners, developing integral framework for interdiction strategy aimed at intercepting drug shipments, legal aspects etc.,
The meeting also discussed threadbare various issues related to detecting and blocking financial flows linked to illicit traffic in opiates, preventing the diversion of precursor chemicals used in illicit drugs manufacturing etc.,
“Being the guardians of all entry points into the country, DRI will extend all possible help with regard to sharing intelligence and patterns of transport.”, assured K.Vinay Kumar, Additional Director – DRI.
Recognising the shared responsibility, the FRRO officials also responded positively to furnish the details of those who overstay and liaise with the HCP teams to provide guidance in deportation process.The attendees expressed appreciation for close collaboration and partnership and spoke in favour of holding meetings on a regular basis.
Concluding the meeting, City police chief said that “The prioritization of exchange of information, coordination and technical assistance interventions on the ground is the need of the hour.”
