Drugs worth over 82 lakh seized, eleven arrested

A total of 11 individuals, including inter-State drug traffickers, peddlers, and consumers, were arrested by the Hyderabad police in separate operations. The officials seized a total of 386 grams of narcotic substances, including cocaine, mephedrone (Meow-Meow/MD), and ecstasy pills, valued collectively at over ₹82 lakh. The seizures included 276 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of MD, 11 ecstasy pills, three mobile phones, and a country-made pistol with six live rounds.

In one of the largest seizures, the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) along with Golconda police busted a Mumbai-Hyderabad cocaine network by arresting four inter-State peddlers, identified as Mujaffar Wahid Shaikh, 30, an electrician, Vinod Kishanlal Shrivasthav, 53, a taxi driver, Chaitanya Vinayak Wagh, 29, an artist, and Mustak Khan, 31, a delivery boy, all based in Mumbai, along with peddler, Prem, 29, a private employee, and two Hyderabad-based consumers. The group was found in possession of 276 grams of high-grade cocaine and eight mobile phones, worth ₹69 lakh. Police said the drugs had been sourced from foreign nationals through sea routes and supplied across States by a chain of individuals.

Mujaffar Wahid Shaikh, a fifth-grade dropout from Chanda Bazaar, Uttar Pradesh, had worked as a welder and electrician in Mumbai before entering drug trade in 2016. He used to source cocaine from foreign suppliers who smuggled it into India via sea routes. Similarly, Vinod Shrivastav, a former taxi driver from Prayagraj, transitioned from couriering drugs on commission to full-fledged peddling after a road accident in 2024. Chaitanya Wagh, an aspiring 3D artist, and Mustak Khan, a former delivery agent, were also drawn into the network, each procuring cocaine at lower rates from Mumbai, and selling it to Hyderabad-based peddler, Prem.

Prem, who already has multiple narcotics cases against him, used his corporate day job as a cover while actively supplying drugs in the city.

In a separate operation, H-NEW and Bollaram police apprehended 28-year-old software employee Harshavardhan alias Harsha, who was caught with 10 grams of cocaine, 11 ecstasy pills, and a mobile phone worth ₹3.1 lakh. A native of Hyderabad, Harshavardhan reportedly slipped into drug use following a love failure, and eventually began sourcing cocaine from Bengaluru and Goa to supply it within the city. Police said he used his income from drug peddling to sustain a lavish lifestyle, frequenting pubs and nightlife hotspots.

In another significant bust, H-NEW in coordination with Begum Bazaar police arrested two inter-State drug transporters, identified as Pawan Bhati, 24, and Hemsingh Kachhawa, 26, both from Rajasthan, and a local peddler, Jeetendara Panwar, 28. Officers seized 100 grams of MD, a country-made pistol, six live rounds, one empty shell, and three mobile phones. The total haul was valued at ₹10 lakh.

Investigations revealed that Jeetendara, a sweet maker by profession, partnered with his contacts from Rajasthan to distribute the synthetic drug in Hyderabad after his sweet shop business failed in a span of six months. He also illegally acquired a firearm, which he test-fired in Kattedan before his arrest.

Meanwhile, Pawan Bhati returned to Hyderabad in May 2025 after working as a driver in his native town following the failure of his shops in Hyderabad. He set up a juice shop in the city during the summer season and later went to Rajasthan to procure MD drug from Surender, a resident of Nagur, Rajasthan, and delivered to Jeetendara Panwar for sale. Hemsingh Kachhawa, an accused in a 2021 POCSO case who was released recently, procured the contraband from Rajasthan and delivered to Jeetendara against a commission.

Cases have been registered under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act, and further investigations are under way to trace the supply chains, financial trails, other peddlers and foreign nationals involved in the network.

Average speed in City increased from 17 to 24 km/hr - More measures in pipeline to ease traffic congestion

Today, Sri C.V. Anand, IPS, Director General and Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, held a review meeting on traffic problems in Hyderabad City and their solutions. The meeting was attended by S.I.s, Inspectors from all traffic police stations, ACPs, Additional DCPs, Sri.BK.Rahul Hegde IPS DCP Traffic-1,Sri.Ashok Kumar DCP Traffic-II, Sri.R.Venkateswarlu IPS DCP Tr.III, and the Joint CP Traffic -Sri.D.Joel Deviss IPS. On this occasion, he provided guidance on the basic principles of traffic control and management.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Sri C.V. Anand stated:

"Until last year, the average vehicle speed in the city was 17 to 18 kilometers per hour. Currently, it has increased to 24 to 25 kilometers per hour. These results have been achieved through the diligent efforts of the Hyderabad Traffic Police. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved.

Approximately 1600 new vehicles are added to the roads every day. Across the three Commissionerates, a total of 91 lakh vehicles are on the roads daily.

'Operation Rope' has yielded excellent results. We are preparing to strengthen it further using a more scientific approach.

We are systematically moving forward with the management of VIP movements. Our Honorable Chief Minister has also issued instructions not to halt traffic for extended periods during his travel. We are working accordingly, and this has brought us immense satisfaction.

Currently, 80% of traffic signals in Hyderabad are operating on auto mode. This is helping to clear traffic quickly.

Regarding traffic violations, we are focusing on the quality of penalties rather than the quantity of fines imposed. This approach has led to a reduction in overall traffic fines.

We are monitoring Hyderabad's traffic through drone cameras. To further improve Hyderabad's traffic system, we are taking assistance from Google. In addition to Google Maps, Google is also providing us with technical support. With the cooperation of owners of high-rise multi-storied buildings in Hyderabad, we are installing 25 'high-rise cameras' on these buildings to obtain an 'Eagle View'. Through these, traffic officials can proactively identify traffic problems, alert local traffic authorities, and provide suggestions for appropriate solutions.

Due to a shortage of traffic personnel in the city, we are introducing the 'Traffic Marshal' system. Under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), corporations are encouraged to appoint these marshals. We will provide them with training and utilize them for traffic control.

Transgender individuals serving as traffic assistants are performing their duties exceptionally well, yielding positive results. We have submitted a report on this to the government. We will undertake more appointments in the traffic department in the coming days, and the government is also preparing to fill vacancies in other departments.

We are taking all necessary measures for the upcoming monsoon season. HYDRA, GHMC, and the Police departments are working in coordination.

The nuisance caused by private travel buses in the city is very high. We will hold a meeting with their management and take appropriate action."

HYDERABAD TRAFFIC POLICE ORGANIZES MEETING WITH SCHOOL MANAGEMENTS TO ENHANCE SAFETY OF SCHOOL CHILDREN

Today i.e., on 19-06-2025, in a proactive step towards strengthening the safety and well-being of school-going children in Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Traffic Police organized a meeting with school managements. The initiative aims to ensure collective efforts among school authorities, parent committees, auto unions, and transport operators for the academic year 2025–2026.

Sri C.V. Anand, IPS, DG and Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad City, attended this program as the Chief Guest. Among the dignitaries present at the meeting were Smt. Dasari Harichandana, IAS (Collector and District Magistrate, Hyderabad), Sri Gopal (Additional Commissioner, GHMC), Sri Ramesh (Joint Transport Commissioner), Sri Munisekhar (ED, RTC), Sri D. Madhukar Naik (CEO, Cantonment Board), Sri Rajasekhar Reddy (Secretary General, HCSC Traffic forum i/c), Sri Shekar Reddy (Secretary General, HCSC) Smt. R. Rohini (DEO), Sri Lingaiah (Additional Director, School Education), and other senior officials.

The main focus of the meeting was on improving the safety of students while traveling to and from schools. Discussions included the need for traffic management around schools, safe transport systems, and enhancing road safety awareness among all stakeholders. Topics such as vehicle permits, seating capacity, display of school names and numbers, driver experience, and presence of a female attendant in every school bus were addressed. Awareness programs were also initiated to prevent road accidents involving school children.

Smt. Rohini, DEO, stressed the importance of appointing lady attendants in school buses, maintaining bus fitness, and preventing driving under the influence. She urged schools and parents to instill traffic awareness among children.

Sri Lingaiah, Addl. Director of School Education, applauded the initiative and called for more such programs to promote transport safety awareness.

Smt. Dasari Harichandana, IAS,  Collector and District Magistrate, Hyderabad highlighted the urgent need to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to prevent road accidents involving school children. She urged schools to strictly adhere to G.O. Ms No. 187 (07-07-2017), and uphold the Right to Education Act for children aged 6–14.

Sri Munisekhar (ED, RTC), Sri Rajsekhar Reddy (Secretary, HCSC, Traffic Forum Incharge) expressed their support and appreciation for the initiative, reinforcing their commitment to child safety in school transportation.

Sri D. Joel Davis, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Hyderabad, speaking on the occasion, shared that over 9 million vehicles operate daily in Hyderabad, and only 3,000 personnel are available to manage the city’s traffic. He stated that 8 students have lost their lives in road accidents between 2023 and 2025. Special drone surveillance will soon be introduced near schools, and he emphasized that traffic regulation near school premises is the responsibility of the respective school managements. He advised schools to deploy their own security staff for traffic regulation.

He cautioned against overloading school vehicles and urged parents to also take accountability instead of leaving everything to the police. He recommended raising awareness among students about traffic signals and staggering school hours for primary and high schools to help reduce traffic congestion. He issued a stern warning that minors driving vehicles would lead to vehicle registrations being canceled and driving licenses being denied until they turn 25. So far, 766 vehicle registrations have been canceled for such violations.

Sri C.V. Anand, IPS, DG and Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, later addressed the gathering and said that this awareness program was organized in view of the reopening of schools and the importance of student safety. He stated that such awareness initiatives have been a regular tradition and congratulated the Joint Commissioner of Police and his team for organizing the event. He pointed out that security issues typically arise when schools reopen and must be addressed proactively. He mentioned that 8 students have died over the last three years due to negligence and emphasized that students must commute only in school buses and that school management must implement and maintain all safety measures. He also cautioned the school principals and managements will be held responsible for safety lapses within 200 meters of school premises.

He advised schools to install and maintain CCTV cameras around their premises as a basic safety standard. He warned drivers to be vigilant when students are boarding and alighting, as these are the most accident-prone moments. Even a single child’s death can bring a huge impact on a school, he said. Noting that some children travel in overloaded autos, he urged parents to monitor how many children are being taken in each auto.

He advised schools to ensure the presence of signboards in front of their premises and said that areas like Abids, Secunderabad, and Jubilee Hills face more traffic issues due to school clusters. He assured efforts to form special coordination teams in such areas, involving transportation and traffic personnel. He revealed that the city has 3,000 traffic police officers, but only 325 of the 650 major junctions can be manned due to manpower constraints. He also raised concerns about the presence of pan shops and juice centers near schools potentially being involved in the sale of narcotic substances. He called upon all stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

This programme was attended by Sri Rahul Hegde, IPS (DCP Traffic-I), Sri N. Ashok Kumar (DCP Traffic-II), and Sri R. Venkateshwarlu, IPS (DCP Traffic-III), along with Addl. DCsP, ACPs, Inspectors, and other traffic personnel.

Hyderabad Traffic Police calls upon all school managements, parents, and transport stakeholders to join hands in making Hyderabad a model city for school children safety.
