Hyderabad police’s Swift Women Action Team (SWAT), comprising 35 women constables trained in protest management, was launched on Tuesday. The dedicated unit was created to handle the challenges of detaining female protestors during rallies and dharnas in the city. Announcing the launch, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said that the increasing frequency of protests in Hyderabad has often posed operational difficulties, particularly when women are involved. “These women have undergone specialised training in karate, along with specific instruction on how to safely detain and manage women during protests,” said Mr. Anand.

The official noted that more personnel will soon be recruited to expand the unit into two full platoons, increasing its strength to 42 members.

Mr. Anand informed that the government has earmarked 11.5 acres of land at the stadium site for the Hyderabad City Police. On this land, two five-storey buildings are under construction — one designated for the City Security Wing (CSW) and the other intended for the storage and parking of seized vehicles from across the city’s seven zones. Additionally, a new horse stable and training ground are being developed to accommodate the Mounted Police Unit.

The commissioner further noted that an additional two acres of land near the Traffic Training Institute (TTI) was allocated for the police department’s use. The Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy sanctioned ₹55 crore towards these infrastructure projects and the Police Housing Corporation has been tasked with completing the construction within a year.
